# Globe

> A dotted neon globe on canvas with real coastlines, pulsing markers and lit arcs. Drag or use arrow keys to spin.

Category: Backgrounds. Docs: https://neonkit.heyaadi.com/components/globe

## Installation

```bash
npx shadcn@latest add https://neonkit.heyaadi.com/r/globe.json
```

With the `@neonkit` namespace configured: `npx shadcn@latest add @neonkit/globe`.

npm dependencies: none. Also needs `lib/utils.ts` (`cn`) and `lib/neon.ts` (`neonVars`), which the CLI adds.

## Usage

```tsx
import { Globe } from "@/components/ui/globe"
<Globe
  markers={[
    { id: "fra", lat: 50.03, lng: 8.57, label: "fra1" },
    { id: "sin", lat: 1.36, lng: 103.99, label: "sin1" },
  ]}
  arcs={[{ from: "fra", to: "sin" }]}
/>
```

## Examples

### Edge network

Ten regions at their real coordinates; replication arcs fan out from iad1. Drag it, or focus it and use the arrow keys.

```tsx
import { Globe, type GlobeArc, type GlobeMarker } from "@/components/ui/globe";
const regions: (GlobeMarker & { city: string; ms: number | null })[] = [
  { id: "iad1", label: "iad1", city: "Washington, D.C.", lat: 38.95, lng: -77.45, ms: 9 },
  { id: "sfo1", label: "sfo1", city: "San Francisco", lat: 37.62, lng: -122.38, ms: 14 },
  { id: "gru1", label: "gru1", city: "São Paulo", lat: -23.43, lng: -46.47, ms: 21 },
  { id: "fra1", label: "fra1", city: "Frankfurt", lat: 50.03, lng: 8.57, ms: 12 },
  { id: "lhr1", label: "lhr1", city: "London", lat: 51.47, lng: -0.45, ms: 11 },
  { id: "bom1", label: "bom1", city: "Mumbai", lat: 19.09, lng: 72.87, ms: 26 },
  { id: "sin1", label: "sin1", city: "Singapore", lat: 1.36, lng: 103.99, ms: 17 },
### Routes and a graticule
Arcs take [lat, lng] pairs as well as marker ids. The graticule draws every 15°.
```tsx
import { Globe, type GlobeMarker } from "@/components/ui/globe";

const airports: GlobeMarker[] = [
  { id: "DOH", label: "DOH", lat: 25.27, lng: 51.61 },
  { id: "LHR", label: "LHR", lat: 51.47, lng: -0.45 },
  { id: "JFK", label: "JFK", lat: 40.64, lng: -73.78 },
  { id: "JNB", label: "JNB", lat: -26.14, lng: 28.24 },
  { id: "SIN", label: "SIN", lat: 1.36, lng: 103.99 },
  { id: "NRT", label: "NRT", lat: 35.77, lng: 140.39 },
  { id: "SYD", label: "SYD", lat: -33.94, lng: 151.18 },
];

export default function GlobeRoutes() {
  return (
    <div className="grid w-full max-w-sm justify-items-center gap-4">
      <Globe
        color="amber"
        graticule
        markers={airports}
        arcs={airports.slice(1).map((a) => ({ from: "DOH", to: a.id as string }))}
        longitude={50}
        tilt={18}
        speed={4}
        arcDuration={3.2}
        aria-label="Six long-haul routes from Doha"
      />
      <p className="text-center text-[13px] text-white/55">Six long-haul routes out of Doha.</p>
    </div>
  );
}
```
### Decoration
Not interactive and spinning slowly: an image with a label, out of the tab order.
```tsx
import { Globe } from "@/components/ui/globe";

export default function GlobeStill() {
  return (
    <div className="flex w-full max-w-md items-center gap-6">
      <Globe interactive={false} speed={3} tilt={14} longitude={-30} className="w-36 shrink-0 sm:w-44" aria-label="Globe" />
      <div>
        <p className="font-mono text-4xl tabular-nums tracking-tight text-white/90">31</p>
        <p className="mt-1 text-sm text-white/60">regions, every one within 40 ms of a customer.</p>
      </div>
    </div>
  );
}
```
## API reference
### Globe
A canvas in a square, round box. Size it with a width class; it keeps its aspect.
| Prop | Type | Default | Description |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| `markers` | `GlobeMarker[]` | `[]` | { id?, lat, lng, label?, live? }. Labels draw beside the point and are read to screen readers; live: false draws a dim point with no pulse. |
| `arcs` | `GlobeArc[]` | `[]` | { from, to }, each a marker id or [lat, lng]. Great-circle arcs lifted off the surface, each with a pulse of light. |
| `speed` | `number` | `6` | Auto-rotation in degrees per second. 0 holds it still. |
| `longitude` | `number` | `10` | Longitude facing the viewer at the start. |
| `tilt` | `number` | `20` | Latitude at the centre of the view; positive looks down on the north. |
| `interactive` | `boolean` | `true` | Drag to spin with inertia, and arrow keys when focused. |
| `arcDuration` | `number` | `2.6` | Seconds for a pulse to cross an arc. |
| `graticule` | `boolean` | `false` | Parallels and meridians every 15°. |
| `color` | `NeonColor` | `inherited` | Color of the land, rim, arcs and markers. |
## Accessibility
- Interactive globes are a focusable group with a 'globe' role description and instructions linked by aria-describedby. Left and Right turn 15° (45° with Shift), Up and Down tilt 10°, Home resets the view.
- The accessible name lists the labelled markers, so the locations are available without seeing the canvas. Pass aria-label to say more.
- The land is a 1° grid from Natural Earth's 1:110m coastline, about 3 kB in the file. No three.js, no WebGL, no fetch.
- Dots are spaced about 5.5 pixels apart at any size and drawn in six batches by depth, so a frame is a handful of fills.
- Drawing stops off screen and in background tabs. With reduced motion it draws one still frame; dragging and the arrow keys still turn it, without inertia.
- Touch drags turn it sideways only; vertical swipes still scroll the page.
